Citadel Award

On Thursday, March 3, 2005, the Charleston Foreign Affairs Forum was co-sponsor with the Mark Clark Greater Issues Series at the The Citadel. The event, held in McAlister Field House, was attended by the entire Corps of Cadets, former SC Senator and Citadel graduate Ernest F. Hollings, Citadel President Gen. John Grinalds and dozens of members of the Charleston Foreign Affairs Forum.  The keynote speaker, former Senator Bob Kerrey, addressed the challenges facing American foreign policy in the future. Kerrey, a Medal of Honor winner, was, most recently, a member of the 9/11 Commission. His speech, as appropriately reported in the Post and Courier, was significant to all of us who are concerned about our nation's future.  Sen. Kerrey, now President of the New School University in New York City, particularly emphasized the importance of character development.  He stressed the importance of character, so that when decisions face us, including decisions that may go against the majority, we have the fiber to face those decisions and act according to our convictions.

On this day, Cadet Valon Ahmeti of The Citadel was announced by Stuart Dawson, President of CFAF, as the recipient of the first Col. Myron C. Harrington Charleston Foreign Affairs Forum Award. Chosen by the faculty of the political science department under the leadership of Col. Gardel Feurtado, Ph.D., as the outstanding student in the study of foreign affairs, Cadet Ahmeti is an exemplar of the character of which former Senator Kerrey spoke.  Cadet Ahmeti is a native of Kosovo. Following graduation, he will be commissioned in the Kosovo Protection Corps as an army officer.
