Years ago, the International Paper Company ran a series of public service announcements in mass-circulation magazines like Time and Newsweek that gave concise, pithy advice on matters of language and writing. They asked well-known figures to weigh in with their opinions on such topics as how to use a library (not included here, because so obviously dated), how to write well, how to enjoy the classics, and even how to acquire a stronger vocabulary. The reprints that appear below are testimony to how timeless the guidelines for good reading and writing are.
