Why Would Anyone Want to be Taught by Me?

1. Structuring of the class is essential.

• "They know I am going to push them." (Tom Thompson)
• Be a moderator in classroom discussions.
• Teach students to teach themselves.
  • The goal of the instructor is to set up the class as a facilitator.

2. Engage students with stories and practical application

• Tell stories that link the subject matter to the class.
• Tell stories linking the history of psychology to the current state it is at now.
  • Look at the thinking of important individuals in the history of psychology.
  • Where is this going and where this is going to end up.
• Get classes application oriented as opposed to simply focusing on theory.
  • Content vs. skills.
• Engage the students at the right level.
  • Make a connection between processes in the classroom and application to professions.
  • Connect them with the bottom line objective of money.

• See your profession as a means to:
  1. Prepare people to think and problem solve.
  2. Teach students transferable skills that they can use in the real world.
• Teach students to solve problems and be successful in their careers.
• Provide a safe place to relax, learn, and express ideas in the classroom.
  • Diversity Bingo-makes students talk to other students in the class to find out more about each other.
