Carl
Betterton, Ph.D., P.E.
Biographical Sketch
Overview
Carl is a faculty
member at The Citadel's School of Business
Administration, where
he teaches Principles of Management, Organizational Behavior, Operations Management, and
Strategic Management. His areas of expertise include operations, strategy, simulation, process improvement,
product and
service quality management, project management, design and construction
management.
Background
Carl was born and
reared in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Upon completing his undergraduate education he enlisted in
the U.S.
Army, and shortly after completing military service, began a career of
public
service with the Army Corps of Engineers. His professional assignments
with
that agency included senior management positions in construction,
operations,
engineering, design, and regulatory organizations, as well as extensive
program
and project management oversight. Carl's international experience
includes four
years as a resident in the Middle East as well as extensive travel to Europe and the Far East.
Education
Carl obtained a BS
degree in civil engineering at Old Dominion University,
receiving the Lampe Award as Outstanding
Engineering Graduate. He received his MBA at The
Citadel, where he was designated the
outstanding member of his class. Carl also graduated with distinction
from the University of Georgia's doctoral program where he pursued studies
and research in operations and strategy at the Terry College of
Business.
Professional and Community Service
Carl is a registered
Professional Engineer and has a long history of active involvement in
technical, professional, and community groups. Among other offices, he
served
as President of the Cincinnati Section of the American Society of Civil
Engineers. His community activities have included serving as a town
Planning
Commission member, election to a four year term on the local School
Board, and
appointment to the City Zoning Board. He is a member of NSPE, ASCE, and
other
organizations. Carl was repeatedly recognized by the Engineers
&
Scientists of Cincinnati through awards for community service and professional
accomplishment;
he was also a 1991 recipient of ASCE's Government Civil Engineer of the
Year
award. Carl was recognized by the Governor of Kentucky for his
leadership in
establishing a private foundation to assist public schools in that
state.
Personal
Carl is married to
the former Sara Marie Black of Anderson, South Carolina.
He and Mrs. Betterton have three daughters: Claire, Lauren, and
Rachel. The Bettertons reside in the town of Hollywood near Charleston, South Carolina.
In his spare time Carl enjoys playing the guitar, gardening, and
restoring old houses.
